NGBS Green Certification
Independent Verification for High-Performance Homes and Developments
NGBS Green certification provides independent, third-party verification that a home, building, or land development is designed and built to achieve high performance in six key areas: Lot Design & Development, Resource Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Operation & Maintenance.
New or existing residentially-used buildings can earn Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald certification, depending on the number of green practices successfully incorporated in its design and construction.
The commercial portion of the building can either earn Certified for Core and Shell or Certified for Full Mixed-Use Building Compliance.
Home Innovation is the sole national certification agency for the National Green Building Standard (NGBS). NGBS Green Certification is recognized by numerous federal, state, and local agencies, lenders, the Appraisal Institute, and code officials.
A new green multifamily building or the residential portion of a mixed-use building can earn Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald certification, depending on the number of green practices successfully incorporated in its design and construction. Existing multifamily buildings can also attain one of the four levels of NGBS Green certification when remodeled according to the NGBS requirements.
The commercial portion of the building can either earn Certified for Core and Shell or Certified for Full Mixed-Use Building Compliance.

Testing Homes to the Highest Green Standards
Every NGBS Green Certified home is inspected in-person at least twice by an experienced, independent NGBS Green Verifier accredited by Home Innovation. Verifiers confirm NGBS compliance before the drywall is installed so they can verify all the green practices, such as insulation installation, inside the wall. Verifiers come back for a final site visit when construction is complete to ensurethe building is fully compliant. Home Innovation reviews every single verification report before the NGBS Green certification is issued.
Giving Products Our Green Approval
We not only certify green homes and developments – we also pre-approve products that help buildings earn certification. Products that carry the Home Innovation NGBS Green Certified mark have been evaluated and approved for specific NGBS criteria. NGBS Green Certified Products make the verification and certification process more straightforward and streamlined for builders, remodelers, and accredited green verifiers.
